Zusammenfassung

The last record of a five-hundred-year civilization is a wedding invitation. After that: silence.

In September 1408, two Icelanders were married in the stone church at Hvalsey fjord, Greenland. The banns were read, the witnesses signed, the paperwork made its way to Iceland. It was completely ordinary ? and it is the last dated event in the history of Norse Greenland. No massacre followed. No plague year. No burned settlement, no mass graves, no last desperate letter. A European society that had lasted longer than the United States has existed ? with farms, churches, a cathedral, a bishop, a legal assembly, and an ivory trade that reached the cathedral workshops of Europe ? simply stopped leaving a record.

This book tells the whole story: Erik the Red talking a fleet of exiles into following him to a place he had cannily named "Greenland"; the farms and the brutal arithmetic of overwintering cattle at the edge of the world; the summer voyages north to the walrus grounds that paid for everything; Vinland and the first European landfall in the Americas; and then the pressures ? the cooling climate, the tired soil, the neighbors who thrived where the Norse struggled, and the ivory market that quietly stopped needing them.

It also retires the story you may already believe. The famous version says the Greenland Norse starved beside a sea full of food, too proud to change. The bone chemistry says otherwise: by the end they were living mostly from the sea. They adapted enormously. The real question ? the one this book takes seriously ? is why adapting was not enough.

What you'll learn:

  • How a real European province ? not an outpost ? functioned for five centuries in the Arctic
  • How DNA detective work traced Europe's medieval ivory to Greenland walrus, and why that trade was the colony's lifeline
  • What ice cores, isotopes, and excavated farms reveal about the final decades
  • Why the Western Settlement emptied a century before the Eastern one
  • How the Thule Inuit solved the Arctic ? and why the Norse borrowed almost none of it
  • The honest verdict on every proposed cause: climate, soil, market collapse, isolation, conflict, and identity

This book is for you if:

  • You read Viking history and want the one story that ends in a question mark
  • You are drawn to lost colonies, Arctic exploration, and disappearances with real evidence behind them
  • You want history that weighs causes honestly instead of selling you a single villain

Five hundred years of Europeans in Greenland ? and then nothing. Start with the wedding, and find out what the silence means.
