Born in Germany while his father served in the U.S. military, Donald Yates was raised in Middle Tennessee and went on to serve 20 years in the United States Army. His career in uniform took him across the globe, including deployments and duty assignments in Germany, Korea, and Iraq, as well as stateside postings at Fort Ord, Fort Campbell, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). He is especially proud to have served briefly with the storied 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during his time in Iraq (2003-2004).

An advocate for lifelong learning, Yates holds multiple academic degrees. He earned an Associate of Arts in General Studies from the University of Maryland, a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science with Cum Laude honors from Washington State University, and a Master of Arts in Communications from Austin Peay State University. His military service, combined with a strong academic foundation, has shaped his interests in history, leadership, and communication.
