Hagar was pregnant, alone, and running into the desert with nothing ahead of her. When God met her there, she did something no one else in Scripture does. She gave Him a name.
El Roi. The God who sees me.
She was still a runaway. Nothing about her situation had changed. She named Him from inside it.
THE NAMES is a Christian prayer book built on forty-one biblical names of God, and every one of them comes out of a moment like hers. Abraham on the mountain, calling that place Jehovah Jireh, the LORD will provide. Gideon, threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites, building an altar he called Jehovah Shalom, the LORD is peace, while the Midianites were still camped in the valley below.
Each of the forty-one entries follows the same path. The story behind the name. What the Hebrew or the Greek actually means. A full prayer written in your own voice, for you to pray as it stands. A prayer from the person in Scripture who prayed it first. And one verse short enough to carry with you through the day.
The prayers ask for real things. Healing that holds. Love that is actually love. Provision, without the fear that usually travels with it. The right people, and the courage to believe that what looks permanent can still change.
Among the forty-one: Yahweh. Elohim. Adonai. El Shaddai. Jehovah Jireh. Jehovah Rapha. Jehovah Shalom. Abba Father. El Roi. El Elyon. Jehovah Nissi. El Gibbor. Immanuel. Alpha and Omega. Twenty-six more are inside.
This is not a six-month study program. It is a book you can open at eleven at night, in the middle of something, and find words in.
It is for anyone who prays. For anyone who stopped praying because nothing seemed to change. For anyone tired of praying in general terms to a God who, in Scripture, has a specific name for the specific thing they need.
Knowing God's name was never about information. It was about being close enough to use it.
The God who has a name for everything you are carrying is the same God who hears everything you bring Him. That has been true for three thousand years. It is still true tonight.
Whatever you are carrying, there is a name for it. Turn the page and start there.
