Kolkata, a 300-year-old city, is undergoing so many changes from native superstitious rural Bengali cultivators and agrarian lifestyle to urban Babu culture of erstwhile Kolkata, Sutanuti & Gobindapur in mid-eighteenth century to controversial colonial British rule afterwards. It lasted for almost 200 years, when India woke up to new dawn of independence in 1947 and we are enjoying total freedom for last almost 80 years.During the heydays of the British Rule, Kolkata thrived in opulence and fame, glory to glory. Prestigious mansions, stupendous palaces and majestic houses were built along the magnificent avenues and wide tree lined roads. The seaport, railway stations and later airport were built to have good communication with the rest of the world and travel opportunity. The second capital of the British Empire, just after London, became everybody's envy. From mediocrity to superlative prominence over a century earned it the coveted position as capital of British India. After independence about 80 years ago, it fell from the glory and became the state capital of West Bengal and an important business destination in eastern part of the country.
